This paper show that p2p systems tend to exhibit various statistic properties, which we we have to care about. Most interesting in the context of Askemos: their conclusion/observation of a clear distinction between client-alike and server-alike systems. So we should organise the network operation model accordingly. Consequentely we should have two types of configurations tuned for each one of the use cases.
P2
A system which uses a high-level declarative language to express overlay networks in a highly compact and reusable form. P2 has been used to specify and execute working, detailed overlays in over 100x less code than is used in traditional implementations. P2 automatically compiles high-level specifications to a dataflow-oriented runtime system, which can itself be used by expert programmers to specify efficient overlays.
Kademlia
Kademlia is a distributed hash table. It's beeing use by bittorrent to distribute the tracker. It's reported to be implemented by the eDonkey network. Development has started to use it as routing method for Askemos. Kenosis is a Python implementation, which looks (end '05) as if it could become a reasonable lookup system for us.
Overview
A nice overview.
Iris and Chord.
Distributed hash tables.
p2psim http://www.pdos.lcs.mit.edu/p2psim/ .
A P2P protocol simulator
"network coding"
A randomised encoding scheme, network encoding, distributes linear combinations of original blocks promises to increase efficiency.
bittorrent
Now azureus removes the tracker. BitTyrant protocol compatible BitTorrent client that is optimized for fast download performance.

Some analysis http://science.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/12/18/2023239 .
MUTE: http://mute-net.sourceforge.net/ .
Anonymous p2p file sharing tool. Like Askemos it claims to be inspired by ant like behavior. Sharing tools like this one are especially interesting to overcome the caveat to enforce a fixed timeout for all Askemos operations (for the sake of responsiveness and against DoS vulnerabilities).

A peer to peer Webcache.
http://dijjer.sourceforge.net/
A "pure" p2p web cache
